An Orderly Life

June 6, 2010

My son has been dating the same girl for some time now, and recently they announced their wedding engagement. She’s a great gal, and I wish them all the best. But recently, we have come to learn a terrible truth about her: today we found out that she has a secret. A secret? So what, you say, everyone has secrets. But sadly, this is a deep dark secret, the kind that might some day require intervention, or even medication.

It was a typical Sunday. Everyone was doing chores – my wife was vacuuming, my future daughter-in-law was doing a load of laundry, my son was pretending to do his homework. I was hiding in the garage, thinking up creative ways to waste time and postpone the execution of my honey-do list until it was too late in the day and I could safely say “I’ll do it tomorrow.”

Suddenly, from inside the house came the sound of a woman screaming. I quickly put my beer back in the fridge and rushed in to find my wife standing in the laundry room, white as a ghost, her finger pointing toward the washer and dryer where I saw the unspeakable.

In a trembling voice, my wife explained to me what had happened. Some time earlier in the day, while waiting for the load to finish, our son’s true love had neatly arranged every plastic hanger on the clothes rack, and had arranged them all by color, size, and brand! After all this time, we finally learned the truth: our future daughter-in-law is a compulsive clothes-hanger organizer!

In the end, we must accept that which life hands to us. I took my wife’s hand and together we went to break the news to our son. As a family, we will all pull together and make the best of this cruel situation. Please wish us luck.
