The Voices of Hate

December 9, 2010

While surfing the news this morning, I ran across the alarming headline “God hates Elizabeth Edwards.” Wow. What an inspiring start to the day.

As it turns out, those same “citizens” who protest at the funerals of our fallen soldiers are planning to march on Elizabeth Edwards’ memorial services this Saturday. I guess she said some blasphemous things after her son was killed in a car accident, and these folks took offense.

It gets worse. After some investigation, I found this amazing video, which I am calling Voices of Hate, sung a bit off-key to the theme of “We are the World” by the men and women of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Maybe I’m not up on current affairs, but to be honest, at first I thought it was a joke. I had to watch it twice before realizing these people are serious. Some of the catchy slogans they promote are:

  • You eat your kids
  • You’re going to hell
  • God hates Jews
  • God hates the world
  • The world is doomed
  • Thank god for dead soldiers
  • Thank god for IEDs
  • God hates fag enablers
  • Thank god for Sept. 11

I’m not sure what the line about eating your kids means, but the rest of it is pretty straightforward, and I really can think of just one suitable response: what the fuck?

To be honest, all of this just gives me a stomachache. I’m completely behind freedom of speech and all the other personal freedoms that make our country great, but where’s a Shiite terrorist when you need one? There are only 70 or so of these assholes, he could probably get them all in one shot.

Jonestown anyone?
