Still on the Line

September 2, 2010

Driving to San Diego today, we enjoyed some excellent Country Western music by the legendary Glen Campbell. As a kid, I remember watching his TV show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and even though it couldn’t compete with the incomparable Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, still he hosted such greats as The Beatles, Three Dog Night, Don Ho, Johnny Cash, and even Rock Hudson (long before he admitted to being queer).

I grew up listening to The Wichita Lineman, Southern Nights, and especially Rhinestone Cowboy, which I still enjoy even though Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton butchered it in the movie Rhinestone during the early eighties. But I think my favorite was “By the time I get to Phoenix,” which is kind of ironic because thirty-five years later Glen and I would both be living there, except by then he would be even more famous for his DUI and aggravated assault arrest after his decades of sobriety.

I guess we’re all human, right? At least he’s not doing Rent-A-Center commercials. Here’s to you, Glen.
